Crafted 2,500 years ago, the "Loutrophoros" was an Athenian vessel, used to carry water from the holy spring of Kallinhoe for ceremonial washing before marriage. When unmarried people died, the gravemarker was sometimes made in the shape of this vessel, alluding to the experience the departed never lived to enjoy.
